Thanks for the report! I'm not entirely sure what changed on the network. The orphans began at 10AM today; before that YoCoin had nearly 100% confirmations.

I investigated the YoCoin source code, and I found that the source code has a hard limit of 8 connections, even when we have an open inbound port for people to connect to us. Since we had so few connections, I think what changed at 10AM is that our client lost connection to the only peer who was reliably transmitting our blocks (the other 7 probably were already on poor internet connections) and therefore our client became delayed in receiving new block information and transmitting our blocks.

I have modified the source code and recompiled so that it is limited to 200 connections. Now we should be able to transmit blocks to the entire network and receive new blocks in a timely manner.

Before going to work this morning, I checked the Yocoin orphan rate. It turns out that there are many threads across the Internet complaining about how many orphans there are for Yocoin. Nobody seems to know what is going on.

This is good for us because it seems that other pools have stopped mining the coin until the issue is sorted out. The difficulty dropped so much that we may have an all-time record high payout today, even with the coin being paid at a "low" rate due to the 15% orphans. Perhaps the other pools don't have the code to adapt to orphaned blocks and adjust their payouts.

For now, don't worry about orphans. They are being accounted for in reduced payout rates, and it is still extremely profitable to mine Yocoins despite these orphans.

How do you account for orphans in the reduced payout rates? It's killing me to see a 41% orphan rate for Yocoins which constituted ~30% of all revenue generated by my Titans so far today. Below is a table for all coins mined so far today.

Coin (All)

Status %-of-Rewards %-of-Mined-Value
Immature 43.04% 16.20%
Lost 0.58% 0.00%
Mature 51.16% 54.01%
Orphaned 5.22% 29.79%
Grand Total 100.00% 100.00%

Maybe we need an option or parameter like c= but the inverse ec=<coin not mine> for miner configuration.

We have an orphan and lost blocks penalty, which is accounted for when choosing coins for mining and paying for shares. Some coins have >40% orphan rates (e.g. WildBeastBitcoin) but are so much more profitable than the other coins that they still make sense to mine. Yocoin seems to be falling into that category right now. The developer has indicated on Bitcointalk that he is working on a fix for the orphan rate, but there is no estimated time when it will occur. For now, there's not much we can do, although you can at least take solace in that every pool is dealing with the exact same issue.

48% of the revenue i mined today was 6 orphaned Yocoins (100% orphan rate ).

At 100% I would say it's time to block the coin until the developer fixes it.

We still mined Yocoins for a portion of the day yesterday because despite your finding so many orphaned blocks, it still earned us money.

The profitability of Yocoins without the orphans would have been something like 12 cents, but with a 70% orphan rate it was somewhere near 5 cents, which was still higher than other coins.

I get the math and understand the logic. It's just frustrating to see as today's mining I'm at a 49% revenue loss from all mined coins due to Yocoin orphans which puts my contribution to the pool at less than my pool reward as of this morning. I'm trying to tune my machines to contribute more than my return and it's frustrating to go backwards. On days like these I can't glean any useful information for tuning purposes with such a high orphan rate and revenue loss.
