Emergency maintenence tonight

Post by Steve Sokolowski » Mon May 13, 2019 4:28 pm

We had hoped to keep the system running until we would be near the datacenter on May 23. However, the motherboard crashed two times in one hour, and we are worried that we won't be able to restart it the next time it fails. The problem appears to be getting worse.

Chris will start driving to Philly in a few hours and expects to arrive there at 2AM EDT, when he will take the system offline to replace the motherboard. Since he has to replace the motherboard and take the system offline, he will also be upgrading the internal network to 10 gigabit ethernet. He hopes to be done by 6AM. During this period, all services will be offline.

The maintenance period that was previously scheduled for May 23 will now be cancelled. We apologize for the inconvenience, but by moving up the maintenance, we should be able to permanently resolve this problem before tomorrow.

The downtime is now over and the system has been restored to normal operation. Early indications are that the crashing issue has been resolved, and the system has also successfully been upgraded to 10 gigabit ethernet for when that becomes necessary in the 2020s.

Chris is now going to sleep and he will return to State College whenever he wakes up naturally. He does not expect to be able to reply to support tickets for 18 hours. We apologize for the delay, which will allow him to get on the road as soon as possible and answer the tickets from where he is most productive.
