Why system is slow on Mondays

Post by Steve Sokolowski » Mon Sep 21, 2015 9:59 am

Some customers might wonder why the system is often behind on Mondays.

The reason is that Chris performs weekly full backups on Monday mornings. After the backups, the disks are then hammered again by compressing all the data, and then the 200GB of data is downloaded to a remote site.

Once the backups are complete, Chris runs the script that deletes old shares from the database. Both of these operations place a lot of load on the system and usually take 6-10 hours in total. They are designed to pause periodically to allow shares to catch up.

Even though statistics aren't being calculated on time during this period, shares get to the database eventually. We have an upgrade to the system to reduce the time the system will be behind on Mondays that we plan on deploying tomorrow, after this round of backups.
