Backup http server ?

Hi,
My first post here, but I have been hashing on prohashing for a few months.

I was wondering why you don't have a backup server for periods of maintenance. I appreciate the costs involved, and I'm not suggesting you duplicate your hardware.

If your server is on your own connection, then perhaps you might consider having a backup http server for maintenance purposes. That way, the web site could still be served with information on the outage and planned downtime. No earnings or account info needs to be served, just basic text. Anything's better than the current error message when the server is offline.

As such a raspberry Pi could do the job and is quite inexpensive to purchase and run. I would even be prepared to donate towards its purchase.
Your domain would still point to your ip and you could use your firewall/switch to direct the incoming traffic to whatever internal ip you wished.

Just an idea, I'm not sure how you have things set up at present.

Thanks for all your hard work :-)

Alan

I was thinking the same however, the forums are still online during the outages (usually) so you can always check there first :)

I would think a temporary switchover to the forums announcement page during maintenance would be of great help to Miners who are unaware of maintenance windows :geek:

Thanks for your comments. I was going to create a landing page for the most recent maintenance but ran out of time to do that. I can host the landing page on the same server used to host the forums, and I will make sure to do that the next time.

How would you like pool status notifications to be delivered? The current plan is to have the Twitter feed act as the news and notifications, but due to your comments I now realize that most of our regular users don't visit the homepage or our Twitter account to see them. How and where would you like these notifications to be placed so we don't have some users caught unaware of any news?

For my purposes a landing page for the web site would be fine. I can tell from the miner what the pool status is, and I don't tend to tweet much. I always have a tab open for the web site though, and so I would get to see any messages that way.
Thanks.
