How do I control the % of GPU usage
Hi guys,
I want to start mining for real with Prohashing mining pool.
My exact machine is this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NB ... UTF8&psc=1
What coin do you guys recommend me mine for with that setup and how do I control the CPU or GPU usage when I mine. I like to keep it at 50% or so.
What kind of Hash Rate do you guys think I could achieve.
I'm doing just some fun mining at the passive browser based mining at coinpot and getting about 46h/s running about 50% CPU(browser based mining does not support GPU). Getting about 50 dogecoins per 24 hours. How much faster would my hashrate be using something like cgminer with the prohashing pool?
Also there is a step by step guide anywhere to setting up Cgminer with prohashing pool?

Re: How do I control the % of GPU usage
I would not recommend mining with a laptop, they don't have adequate airflow. 50% GPU usage might make this more reasonable if possible, but you would be putting that laptop through so much more then it was designed to.
Re: How do I control the % of GPU usage
At 50% CPU, its not problem at all. It doesn't even get hot, is there a way to control GPU, does anyone know?
Re: How do I control the % of GPU usage
you are not going to make anything mining Scrypt or the X-11 algorithims with that laptop. you would be much better of mining an algo that is ASIC resistant.
Re: How do I control the % of GPU usage
Monero and Eth are ASIC Resistent right? Is there a good pool that does that and can pay out in just about any coin? I don't want to solo mine, don't think you can make anything that way.
Using browser mining, I'm getting like 50 dogecoins a day. LOL.

so in a year you may be up to a whole penny!Archbob wrote:Using browser mining, I'm getting like 50 dogecoins a day. LOL.

Actually no , dogecoins are worth .0063 now. I make a quarter a day!

Hey as long as it's free electricity. If not, you might be paying the light company more than the coins are worth.
Guess it depends on what you pay per kilowatt.
As long as you are having fun with the hooby.
Enjoy it!

Re: How do I control the % of GPU usage
yeah, its .13 per KWH, but it doesn't cost much over just using the computer all day which is what I usually do. And if they eventually go up in value it'll definatly be worth it. On my laptop, probably adds like an extra $5/month to the electric bill.
Re: How do I control the % of GPU usage
That's a 200 watt laptop, and 50% on the CPU and GPU do not mean 100 watts. It would more likely be 130-160 watts depending on how the consumption changes between 50% usage and 100% usage on the GPU and CPU, which will not be linear (A GPU or CPU that is using 50% of their full potential does not draw 50% less wattage) + all the other power consumption items like the monitor, motherboard, hdd, etc. etc. etc.Archbob wrote:yeah, its .13 per KWH, but it doesn't cost much over just using the computer all day which is what I usually do. So i'd be willing to bet at 50% usage using both the CPU and GPU that it'd be somewhere between 130-160 watts, which means at .13 cost would be:
Anywhere between these two numbers:
130 watts 24 hours a day:
$0.4056 Per day
$12.3455 per month
$148.145 per year
And
160 watts 24 hours a day:
$0.4992 per day
$15.1944 per month
$182.333 per year
And if you are making .25 cents a day currently as you have implied, you are therefore losing money. Granted, i understand that is only using the CPU.
If we take only the CPU, and if everything else was idle (still would be using power, but i'm not going to try and figure out how much power)
That CPU in that laptop is a Intel i7-7700HQ which has a TDP of 45 watts, however intel processors are known to be (at 100% usage) around 20-30% more wattage then advertised. Gaming, which does not use a CPU (in general) fully, and usually only loads the CPU around 50%, has been shown to be using the 45 watts the TDP says it does. So i feel safe in using 45 watts as baseline to do your cost analysis.
Again, this is ONLY the CPU, this does not include the idle power consumption of the GPU, the monitor, the motherboard, etc. etc. etc.
45 watts 24 hours a day:
$0.1404 per day
$4.27342 per month
$51.2811 per year
Again, remember that's just the CPU and does not account for anything else in idle, or not in idle. It's more likely you're using at least double that even without using the GPU.
So it's extremely unlikely you are making any money at all. So if you want to do it simply for the fun of it, fine, but again, you're putting your laptop through way more then it was intended, even if it does not get hot (according to you). You're just lowering the life span of the product.
As to limiting your GPU to 50% usage question. I don't think that's possible in the way you want. That being said, you can (usually) downclock the GPU to half its frequency and then run it like that.
