You can change the background on the forums by going to the little people icon on the bar at the top right and selecting "User Control Panel".
You then Select Board preferences along the top, and then select Edit global settings along the left hand side. Where it says "My board style, you can select any of the other available options in the dropdown menu for a lighter colored background.
