APW5 PSU with a D3 and L3+

Post by GenotypeJim » Thu Sep 14, 2017 8:09 pm

Hello miners,

I was wondering if anyone had success with using a single APW5 PSU to power two large miners such as an L3+ or D3.
I have an L3+, an APW5 and a D3 on the way. With 6 pin Y splitters can I run them both off the one APW5?
I'm in Australia so can draw the full 2400W from the wall.

Bitmain said as long as the wiring of the splitters is ok then that shouldn't be an issue, but still just hoping to hear from someone who's already successfully doing this.

Cheers!!!

If you were just needing to split the PCI-E cable that runs to the CONTROLLER to get 1 extra cord to run to the other box's CONTROLLER sure, that doesnt use a lot of power.

But if you are splitting a single PCI-E into 2, and then plugging both into the same hashboard, you may as well ditch the splitter and only plug 1 PCI-E into the hashboard and just be done with it. The reason they have 2 plugs on the boards is to draw power evenly from 2 feed lines and distribute the power load. Buy only plugging in 1 line you are pulling the full power load through just 1 line instead of 2, doubling the power draw and likely wearing out the wires over time.

Totally not saying it can't be done, just betting the power doesn't last as long with 2X the flow being pulled through half as many wires as intended.
The candle burning at both ends, burns twice as bright, but for only half as long.

I'd just buy an APW3++ but BTC/LTC isn't a pay option and USD Wire requires a min $600 payment. I've messaged them, so here's hoping it's just a temporary issue

Worst case, I go buy a 1300W PSU from the computer store
