All services offline on November 22

Post by Steve Sokolowski » Wed Nov 08, 2017 6:46 pm

While this topic has been discussed elsewhere, I wanted to post here in an announcement for those who might just stop by periodically that all services will be offline on November 22. The outage will probably last almost the entire day. The purpose of the outage is to perform major hardware upgrades to enable us to move forward with our aggressive expansion plans. Almost $7,000 will be spent on these tasks.

Here's a list of some of the things to be done:
  • Installation of a new 20-core server to host SHA-256 daemons for mining
  • Upgrade of the database to Postgres 10, which features additional parallelism
  • Copying and relocation of virtual machines
  • Assembly and installation of a floor-to-ceiling server rack to replace the makeshift platforms
  • Running of a 240V 50A power line to the server area for future capacity
  • Installation of a return duct to vent waste heat
  • Addition of a large uninterruptable power supply to provide enough power until generator startup
  • Switchover to a direct enterprise-class Internet connection that protects against DDoS attacks, replacing our VPN workaround
  • Upgrade of the 2014 original server to add additional cores
  • Installation of more solid state disks on all servers to handle expanding blockchains, especially Ethereum's massive blocks
These changes will not immediately impact performance. Instead, they will provide the hardware necessary to support the parallelized coin assignment that will be released later, and will allow us to host the hundreds of SHA-256 daemons.

Since all services will be offline as the Internet connections are reconfigured, these forums will also be unavailable and updates will be provided on twitter.

Weather forecasts currently indicate that the polar vortex may result in a Nor'easter bringing snow just before Thanksgiving. If a blizzard occurs, this maintenance will be rescheduled.

This date has been changed to November 22, because Chris thinks that he's going to need a day onsite to do physical work like unboxing and assembly of the rack and servers before he gets to the software configuration. I updated the title to reflect the changes.

Awesome, can we have a approx. time/date of when the last payout will occur from the system? ( for confirmed coins :) )
